Welcome to Sparks on the Water- the website of Rev. Valerie Freseman!

I am a Unitarian Universalist minister, a spiritual director in-training, and a facilitator of rites of passage.

The four elements of air, fire, water, and earth are a lens through which our perception can be focused. Over the ages, magicians, alchemists, and others have used the elements to provide a blueprint for understanding life. Although we have science and chemistry to guide us today, the four elements can be used as a metaphor through which we can discern what is active in our lives and what is just below the surface.

“Sparks on the water” was a phrase that I received in meditation to describe my ministry. Inspiration- the sparks that fly from anvils of transformation and hard work- exists side by side with pools of reflection- the deep, imaginative, and emotive self. If we are lucky, these two dissimilar elements can create moments of insight. The waters of our deepest dreams need not cancel the fire, the heat of the sun does not dry up the river of contemplation The magic comes when we learn how to use the elements we are drawn towards.

Please use this website to learn more about my ministry. From time to time, I also use this website to reflect on the spiritual dimensions of social justice, joy, creativity, and humor- I like to think of it as “observational spirituality”. If you are interested in learning more bout rites of passage or spiritual direction, please reach out!
